Dental Health Care: Periodontal Disease

The teeth and surrounding structures are more susceptible than we think to infection. With proper hygiene can be more protected from bacteria that attack our teeth and gums.

The periodontium

The periodontium consists of the tissues that surround and protect the teeth. These are the gum tissue, bone around the tooth (called alveolar bone), periodontal ligament and cemented. A healthy gingival is pink, has an elastic consistency and appearance of orange peel. In a healthy tooth the gingival come to embrace the neck of the tooth, which is the union between the crown and root.

The bone under normal conditions reaches 1-1.5 mm below the attachment.

Periodontal Disease.

Periodontal diseases are infections caused by periodontal bacteria. At first there is an inflammation or gingivitis. If it evolves, resulting in loss of tissue that makes the tooth loses its support and fall. It is what is known as periodontitis.

1. Gingivitis Periodontal Disease

It is an inflammation of the gums that is caused by the existence of bacteria which, in turn, produce an infection.

The gum is swollen, red and bleeds easily or spontaneously at the slightest touch. Although sometimes changes color and appearance are not readily apparent, the dentist will detect them through dental probing.

It resolves spontaneously, so it must be killing bacteria. Then the symptoms disappear and are not sequels.

If untreated, this condition can be maintained as such days, months or years without any changes. However, many people may evolve causing gingivitis periodontitis.

2. Periodontitis

This is what was formerly known as pyorrhea. To produce a periodontitis may have previously needed gingivitis.

The bacteria that affect the gingival, are introduced under it and gingivitis becomes periodontitis.

Periodontitis causes irreversible destruction of tissue, which begins with a receding gums, with the destruction of the periodontal ligament, and finally the alveolar bone, which makes the tooth loses its support and eventually fell.

The dentist in the clinic can see the infection, which is a bag called periodontal pocket.

Prevention.

We now know that there is a genetic predisposition to the disease. However, there are factors that favor its appearance and deterioration such as poor hygiene, calculus, snuff, stress and trauma in one or being excessive force teeth during chewing on them.

To slow its progression the dentist will give instructions for proper dental hygiene, and perform a subgingival scaling or periodontal surgery.

It will also be necessary to eliminate the factors favoring the emergence of the disease by avoiding smoking, controlling stress and reviewing the teeth were poorly positioned and could be getting stronger from the right.

Recent studies have impacted on the preventive role of calcium in periodontal disease progression. An inadequate supply of calcium not only related to the onset of osteoporosis, but with the loss of bone at the jaw, especially alveolar bone and attachment loss of teeth.

An adequate supply of calcium is critical in relation to dental health, so that numerous studies have found improvements in inflammatory processes and mobility of the teeth of patients suffering from gingivitis after increasing calcium intake.

Thus, increased calcium intake in people with periodontal disease, not only helps in the fight against osteoporosis, it also improves this type of pathology.
